if you're looking at monochrome lasers, get a brother. You can find them for well under $100 (HL-2140). Right now Staples has a multifunction with copy, scan and fax for $129. The nice things about brother:
1) they're built to last. I have a $50 hl-2040 which is years old and still going strong. My son just took it to college for the second year. Many of my friends have them (we bought them around the same time on sale) and they're all still working. 2) Brothers use toner cartridges which cost $30 and last for 3,000 pages. In general it's not a good idea to refill toner cartridges yourself. It's messy, the powder is carcinogenic and can cause breathing issues. It often doesnt work. Samsung in particular will print so light as to be useless if you refill the cartridge. But with Brother cartridges for $30, it doesnt make sense to refill.
