Voted Favorite Choice: Okidata C5100 Printer
Taking a look at the Okidata C5100 printer, when assessing it for possible use, demonstrates that Okidata certainly knew what it was doing with this color and monochrome unit. It can work equally as well as a standalone model or connected to a network workgroup, as a matter of fact. At present, refurbished models can be found that cost between $380 and $450. The C5100 does many things well, it must be said, and the Okidata 42127404 offers the print clarity every business seeks.
The Oki 42127401 yellow toner is no slacker when it comes to print speeds, either in color mode or when it's been tasked to put out monochrome product. Color pages can be produced, in fact, at a rate of 12 per minute. This is better than expected performance when factoring in the relatively low price of this Okidata printer. Adding to the attractiveness of this unit, it can also put out a sterling 20 pages per minute of monochrome product.
Paper holding capacity is also a fine 400 sheets, contained within two different trays. One is a manual paper feed while the other is contained within the printer and slides in and out. Optional trays can raise the amount of paper held within the printer by 500 additional sheets. It can also accomplish double-sided printing with an optional duplex unit, which is an added bonus.
The manufacturer's obviously designed this particular printer to be able to make use of a wide variety of Windows operating systems as the host server for the printer. What this means is that the C5100 normally has to access the PC's operating system to process print jobs, though there's a built-in networking technology suite that allows many more users to make use of the printer, if needed.
Because this is a color printer, four different cartridges will be needed; one of black, another of yellow, still another of magenta and one more of cyan. The printer, though, is an able performer even if one of the color cartridges runs dry. Keep in mind that color printers tend to come with higher-cost cartridge sets, and the C5100's will start at $150 and go up from there. They do last a long time, fortunately.
Connectivity with the C5100 is also fine enough. It comes with an Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX port, as well as a modern USB 2.0 interface. It should be fairly simple to take the printer, then, and connect it to a networked workgroup or a single PC and in fairly rapid fashion, to boot. Okidata improved this printer over its predecessor printer by adding twice the RAM and processing speed.
In terms of that speed and memory, the standard on-board processor is a 200 MHz unit while the printer itself is equipped with 32 MB of RAM, which is usually enough to accommodate most print jobs, even if several users at once are sending jobs to the printer. That RAM can be upgraded to 288 MB, if needed. The printer delivers fine print resolutions, at 1,200 by 600 dots per inch (dpi). Print emerging from the C5100 will emerge looking uniformly clean and sharp.
At present, the Okidata C5100 printer is being offered by a number of online retailers and resellers at between $380 and $450 for a nicely-refurbished model. There are also a great many retailers that carry Oki 42127404. Keep in mind that Okidata 5000 series toner runs about $150 for a set. It's definitely worthwhile to check with online bulk toner retailers for their prices which are often much better.
