E3 2009 Announcement Summary

This week has been a massive week for gamers and the gaming industry. With all the news from the E3 Expo in LA, we have seen game announcements, upcoming console features and even console announcements. This has led to a huge amount of buzz going around the internet with all the new announcements. This post will help to sum up all the announcements that came straight out of LA.

The gaming expo all started with Microsoft. They released details for over 10 new games during their conference, which was the first of the event. Here's some of the game that you can expect to see being released in the near future:

  • Splinter Cell Conviction – Autumn 2009
  • Alan Wake – 2010
  • The Beatles: Rock Band – September 9th 2009

Aswell as all these massive games, they also announced a range of massive console features that we can expect to see coming to the 360 in the next few months. These included:

  • Twitter and Facebook modified for the 360
  • Netflix
  • Sky TV
  • Last FM (free for gold members)
  • Zune HD video

Possibly the biggest console feature they announced was Project Natal. Project Natal is controller free gaming where you will be able to use your body to control your games. The magic of the 3D camera will allow you to automatically log into Xbox Live by using facial recognition aswell as being able to start games, chats and videos by using the voice activiation technology. And finally, the ability to scroll through the Xbox 360 dashboard by simply using your hand. Currently, no release date has been announced for this awesome new console feature.

Later that day came the EA conference where they announced a series of game releases that included:

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic – 2010
  • Need for Speed: Shift – September 17th 2009
  • Fight Night Round 4 – June 26th 2009
  • EA Sports Active
  • EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis – June 12th 2009
  • Mass Effect 2 – January 10th 2010
  • Brutal Legend – October 16th 2009
  • The Sabateur
  • Crysis 2
  • Dragon Age Origins – October 20th 2009
  • Dante’s Inferno – February 2010
  • Madden NFL 10
  • MMA: Mixed Martial Arts – 2010

After EA came Ubisoft with some pretty big and awesome looking game announcements. These included the following:

  • Assassin’s Creed 2
  • Splinter Cell Conviction
  • Red Steel 2
  • No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
  • Avatar: The Game
  • Shaun White Snowboarding World Stage
  • Academy of Champions
  • Casual Games
  • Your Shape
  • Rabbids Go Home
  • TMNT: Turtles in time Re-shelled

That was all the excitement over for the first day of the expo, on the second day game another 2 console developers, Nintendo and Sony.

The day started with a conference from Wii and DSi makers, Nintendo, who announced a series of games and new console features. These included the following:

  • Metroid Prime: Other M
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Wii Fit Pluz
  • New Super Mario Bros
  • Wii Sports Resort
  • The Conduit
  • Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
  • Dead Space Extraction

They also announced the vitality sensor which is a thumb grip, similar to the ones used in hospitals, to measure your pulse rate. They say that this feature will be included in games designed to help you relax.

Although there were only 2 conferences on the second day, Sony still managed to cause some buzz with their conference where they announced some massive game releases, some new console features aswell as a brand new console announcement.

You can expect to see the following PS3 releases in the near future:

  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  • Heavy Rain
  • Massive Action Game
  • Agent
  • Gran Turismo 5
  • God of War 3
  • The Last Guardian
  • Modnation Racing

As for hardware announcements, they announced that they are developing some technology similar to the Wii. Just like Microsoft's Project Natal, Sony's new motion tech will use a camera, and just like the Wii, it will require 2 controllers. They plan to release a series of games that are designed specifically for this new tech, aswell as incorporating it into their current games.

Sony's final announcment of their conference was a brand new console, the PSP Go. The new PSP Go will be a smaller and lighter version of the current PSP. The PSP Go features an internal flash drive which allows you to storage games rather than carrying around discs. It also contains build in WiFi, Bluetooth and a slot for a flash drive to gain extra storage space.

That was the end of all the conferences for the major developers and publishers, however, I'm sure all of the above will keep us busy enough until the 2010 E3.

Face Unlock feature in Galaxy Nexus poses security risk (InfoWorld)

Face Unlock, the facial recognition software offered in Android 4.0 on the
Galaxy Nexus, is being promoted by Google as an alternative to using a PIN to
unlock a phone. But early reviewers have noticed that Face Unlock sometimes
can be spoofed by a photograph of the owner of the phone, posing a security
risk.
