Tarot Card Readings Provide More Than Entertainment
Some people believe that psychic healers have a "sixth sense" or special powers passed down through their bloodlines. Others believe tarot card readers are just a little more intuitive than most people, able to see "auras" or receive impulses about a complete stranger. Many of us are skeptics who are simply curious as to what tarot card readings could do for us. After all, as the popular adage says, "Don't knock it 'til you try it!" "People come by because they are looking for some kind of direction," said Dawna SuMaria, one of the more experienced tarot card readers at the Hawaiian Islands' 12th annual Psychic Faire in Lihu'e. Miss SuMaria charges $25 for 15 minutes and she has been reading for nearly 50 years. Another who does tarot card readings, Erik Taylor, said that self-actualization is a big part of his readings as well. "It's about helping people get through their everyday things and be the best possible person they can be," Taylor said. Like a mirror, he reflects back to them so they "see the scene as it really is." The Psychic Faire is just one of many spiritual events happening this year.
World renowned psychologist Carl Jung explained tarot card readings as "an alternative psychotherapy." He argued that each of the tarot cards represents an archetype or situation universal to all humans. By recognizing that archetype, an inner reaction is triggered in the seeker, which allows them to voice their concerns, examine their past, recognize current obstacles and prepare for the future. Jung explains that the Death Card, for example, may be viewed as an end of a vice, an internal struggle or sadness, encouraging us to move on. In March 1933, Jung spoke at a seminar, explaining: "The symbol of the sun, or the symbol of the man hung up by the feet, or the tower struck by lightning, or the wheel of fortune, and so on; those are sort of archetypal ideas, of a differentiated nature, which mingle with the ordinary constituents of the flow of the unconscious, and therefore it is applicable for an intuitive method that has the purpose of understanding the flow of life, possibly even predicting future events, at all events lending itself to the reading of the conditions of the present moment."
The rising popularity of tarot card readings tells us a few things about our collective consciousness. One is that people are more open-minded and actively seeking answers. Generally, we do not believe that help can only be found in traditional means. (This idea is also demonstrated by the rise in Traditional Chinese Medicine clinics and schools within the United States that use massage and acupuncture to treat long-term diseases.) Another thing we learn from the popularity of the tarot cards is that the power of suggestion and the power of one's own mind is a powerful thing; one that more people express an interest in studying.
